Epson to Release New Series of Programmable Crystal Oscillators

Wide operating temperature range, tighter frequency tolerance, and lower current consumption

(PresseBox) (Munich, )
Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, "Epson") will extend its popular line of programmable crystal oscillators with two newly developed series of products. The new SG-8101 series and SG-9101 series have a wider operating temperature range and 50% lower current consumption than comparable Epson products, while the SG-8101 also has 66% tighter frequency tolerance. Users will be able to program both the SG-8101 series and the spread-spectrum oscillators that reduce spectral EMI emissions in the SG-9101 series with an SG-Writer II [1] programming tool. Volume production is scheduled to begin in June 2016.

Demand for crystal oscillators with excellent frequency stability and the ability to tolerate a wide range of temperatures has increased in recent years due to a growing need for smaller electronic equipment with more power and functionality in a greater variety of environments, including extreme outdoor and factory installations.

Epson has provided the market with small, accurate, programmable oscillators since launching the world's first programmable oscillators, the SG-8000 series, in 1997. Equipped with a storehouse of efficient, compact and precision technologies, Epson developed the new SG-8101 series and SG-9101 series by leveraging a combination of QMEMS [2], semiconductor, and temperature compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) frequency adjustment technologies.

While both series offer the same easy programmability of frequencies and other parameters as comparable earlier Epson products (the SG-8002 & SG-8003 series in the case of the SG-8101, and the SG-9001 in the case of the SG-9101), they also have a wider operating temperature range, with a top-end limit of 105°C. In addition to a 2.5 mm x 2.0 mm package that will enable electronics manufacturers to save board space, the oscillators will also be available in the following popular package sizes: 3.2 mm x 2.5 mm, 5.0 mm x 3.2 mm, and 7.0 mm x 5.0 mm.

The oscillators in the SG-8101 series have an approximately 66% tighter frequency tolerance and 50% lower current consumption than comparable products. The SG-9101 series oscillators, which use a spread spectrum consume 75% less current than the comparables. Users will be able to program the products to the required output frequency, as well as to the required output frequency modulation profile and cycle, with an Epson SG-Writer II (sold separately).

These oscillators can be used under a wide range of environmental conditions. They will also significantly contribute to performance, lower power requirements, fast development cycles, and low-volume production.

[1] An SG-Writer II and optional components will, with a software update (free), support existing products in the SG-8002 and SG-8003 series as well as the products in the new SG-8101 and SG-9101 series.

[2] QMEMS: QMEMS is a combination of “Quartz,” a crystalline material with excellent characteristics such as excellent frequency stability and high precision, and “MEMS” (micro electro mechanical system).
QMEMS devices, produced via a microfabrication process on a crystalline material instead of on a semiconductor material like MEMS, offer high performance in a compact package. QMEMS is a registered trademark of Seiko Epson Corporation.
