High performance materials for textile architecture

(PresseBox) (Neuss, )
The 3M subsidiary Dyneon is exhibiting at this year's Techtextil its fluoropolymer product portfolio for use in architecture and construction. The focus will be on architectural membranes such as the glass fibre membranes coated with 3M Dyneon PTFE and films made of 3M Dyneon Fluoroplastic ETFE. Techtextil takes place from 4 - 7 May 2015 in Frankfurt am Main.

Today, textiles, whether translucent or even transparent, are indispensable in modern architecture for the design of light and airy rooms. Dyneon is one of the leading manufacturers of fluoropolymers - high performance materials that have proven over several decades to be extremely durable materials in the manufacture and protection of membranes.

Long life and high tensile strength

Glass fibre membranes with coatings of Dyneon PTFE offer outstanding properties for use in architecture such as stadium roofs or solar sails. The high-quality PTFE coated membranes achieve an elongation at break of up to 600 per cent, the coating protects the fabric against UV radiation, moisture and other environmental influences. Even after many years of use the very smooth surface does not become brittle and is able to withstand the most diverse influences and chemicals. What is especially useful: the surface cleans itself to a great extent with each rain shower. This makes the textile membrane very durable and extremely cost efficient due to reduced maintenance costs. In addition, the high tensile strength of the coated glass fibre fabric of up to 10,000 N/5 cm offers architects very large spans.

Highly transparent and thermally insulating

Films made of Dyneon ETFE are often used in light, transparent roof and facades structures, from the small carport to inner courtyard and large, complex stadium roofs. The facades are usually assembled from single or multi-layered films, while the roofs often consist of light pneumatic film cushions. They are highly transparent, almost universally resistant to chemicals and to a large extent maintenance-free, since they are cleaned by the rain. Therefore, the membranes are particularly durable and cost efficient. In addition, cushion systems have good thermally insulating properties. At the same time, they allow more than 90 per cent of sunlight to pass through. That opens up various possibilities: from use as a greenhouse for the promotion of plant growth through to the generation of electricity by integrated photovoltaic systems.

Foldable and mobile

PTFE textiles, woven yarn extruded from 3M Dyneon PTFE are suitable for foldable and mobile structures. Apart from important properties such as a self-cleaning surface, a large span and a long life time, they offer one thing in particular: flexibility.

All textiles and films are available in a large selection of colours and offer architects maximum design freedom.
