Coherent Ships Over 2000 Chameleon Lasers for MPE Microscopy

(PresseBox) (Santa Clara, Calif., )
Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) hit the milestone of shipping its 2,000th Chameleon series laser, first introduced in 2003 and specifically designed for use in multiphoton excitation (MPE) microscopy. The market share leadership of this product goes hand in hand with its top of the class performance specification and field reliability. MPE refers to a group of microscopy imaging techniques that uniquely enable three-dimensional imaging, even in living specimens. These techniques include two and three-photon excitation of dyes, genetically expressed fluorescent probes, second and third harmonic generation (SHG and THG), and Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) imaging.

Darryl McCoy, product manager for the Chameleon, explains, “The continued success of the Chameleon product family is due to two factors – growth in deep tissue MPE applications and innovation of superior benefits in Chameleon to optimally meet the needs of these applications. The market growth is driven in large part by neurosciences, where the development of novel, genetically modified proteins has enabled powerful techniques (e.g. optogenetics, “brainbow” imaging) capable of interrogating both the structure and function of complex neural pathways. Examples of important Chameleon features for these applications include both the longest available wavelength for any “one-box” Titanium:Sapphire laser and the highest power; together, these features enable the deepest possible images. Other key features are faster tuning speeds and the ability to smoothly adjust the pulsewidth at the sample, even for the latest fast scanning microscopes.”

McCoy adds, “Just as important, these simple-to-use lasers have gained a reputation for rugged reliability. In fact, Chameleon lasers were one of the first products at Coherent to benefit from our program that is often called ‘the industrial revolution in scientific lasers.’ This has involved adopting key concepts and testing protocols long-proven in the broader world of industrial products. A critical part of this program is the use of Highly Accelerated Stress (HASS) testing, where every Chameleon laser must pass a rigorous sequence of thermal cycling and vibrational/shock testing before it leaves the factory. On top of this we have responded to the market demand from users performing chronic in-vivo non-linear imaging techniques. Many customers invest heavily in live sample preparation and stimulus response training over a long period and cannot afford the risk of long repair cycles on their laser source. Investment and upgrade of our unique support regime has enabled Coherent to offer a guarantee on system uptime, offering peace of mind together with optimum image performance, speed and quality.”

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a world leader in providing photonics based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets, and is part of the Standard & Poor’s SmallCap 600 Index and the Russell 2000.
