Weiterhin kann der Funktionsumfang auch aus lizenzrechtlichen Gründen beschnitten werden. Dadurch kann z. B. eine einfache (kostenlose) Version erstellt werden, welche nur mit der jeweiligen Steuerung genutzt werden kann. Hierbei kann dann beispielsweise das Scannen von Slaves über den lokalen Windows EtherCAT Master deaktiviert werden, oder man begrenzt die maximale Anzahl der Slaves im Netzwerk.
Die OEM Versionen von EC-Engineer und EC-Lyser sind mittels der Lizenzdatei EcOem.Dat an eine bestimmte Steuerungsfamilie gebunden. Die generierte Netzwerkkonfiguration (ENI Datei) kann nur von der passenden Steuerung verarbeitet werden. Ebenso sind alle Online-Funktionen nur möglich, wenn der EtherCAT Master mit dem entsprechenden Lizenzschlüssel (64 Bit Wert) gestartet wurde. Diese Art der Verbindung erlaubt es auch auf den sonst eingesetzten USB Dongle als Softwareschutz zu verzichten. Die OEM Versionen können ohne Dongle genutzt werden und müssen auch nicht aktiviert werden.
