(pressebox) Eindhoven, The Netherlands, 27.08.2008 - NXP Semiconductors, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today announced that Loewe, a leading European TV manufacturer, has chosen its SAA7164 system-on-chip to add Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and Time Shifting functionality to its new hybrid LCD TV models. The SAA7164 is used as the core SoC of a highly integrated encoder module that enables consumers to pause or record analog sources in addition to digital programs onto a hard disk drive (HDD), without the need for an external set-top box (STB). The advanced 3D comb-filtering and noise reduction offered by the SAA7164 offers optimal video quality of all recorded material. The new hybrid LCD TV models from Loewe will be showcased at IFA in Berlin, Germany from August 29 to September 3, 2008.

"As HD LCD TVs offer increased functionality, it's ideal for Loewe to add features such as digital recording and time-shifted playback that ensure the same picture quality level from recorded as well as live content on our new hybrid LCD TV models," said Dr. Uwe Bach, head of TV development at Loewe. "The SAA7164 solution from NXP will allow our customers to record and watch all types of analog sources such as movies or their favorite TV shows at any time, pause live TV or skip within time-shift recorded content without the need for an additional STB."

"Loewe's choice of the SAA7164 system-on-chip with advanced 3D comb-filtering and noise reduction is in line with Loewe and NXP's ambition to offer more content with the highest possible picture quality on television sets, whether it is broadcast or recorded," said Rolf-Dieter Gutsmann, product marketing manager, TV systems, NXP Semiconductors.

The NXP SAA7164 integrates up to 8 standalone chips: two IF demodulators, two PAL/NTSC/SECAM decoders, two stereo decoders, plus two multi-format compression engines.
