Mediatization and European Integration: the Parliament, referenda and projections for the future (Claes H. de Vreese)

(PresseBox) (Bremen, ) The presentation will give an overview of our current knowledge about the way in which the media cover national referenda on issues of European integration as well as the European Parliamentary elections. It will provide an overview of the most important issues for understanding the role of the media in the run-up to the 2009 EP elections.

Claes H. de Vreese (www.claesdevreese.com) is Professor and Chair of Political Communication and Scientific Director of The Amsterdam School of Communications Research ASCoR in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. He is also Director of NESCoR, the Netherlands School of Communications Research, the national research school in communication science, recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences KNAW. Finally, he is Adjunct Professor of Political Science and Journalism at the University of Southern Denmark

His research interests include comparative journalism research, the effects of news, public opinion and European integration, effects of information and campaigning on elections, referendums and direct democracy. His research is funded by several science foundation grants, including the competitive Veni and Vici grants from the Dutch Science Foundation. He has received awards for research from the International Communication Association and the Danish Science Foundation. He is a member of the Young Academy of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW)) and heis listed as one of the most prolific communication science scholars in Europe.

He has published more than 45 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, including Communication Research, Journalism Studies, Political Communication, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Scandinavian Political Studies, European Journal of Communication, West European Politics, European Union Politics, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mass Communication & Society, and European Journal of Political Research. He has presented close to 100 papers at international conferences and he has held lectures in a dozen of counties. He serves on the Editorial Board of several ISI ranked journals and reviews manuscript for 25+ journals in communication science, political science and European studies.
