Two-Digit Million Euro Order from the Steel Authority of India: Siemens Supplies Power Distribution Equipment for Expansion of the Bokaro Steelworks
The Steel Authority of India is the largest steel producer in the country. At present, the Bokaro facility in the Indian federal state of Jharkand is being expanded and modernized with an investment volume of 110 billion Indian rupees (approx. 1.8 billion euros). In order to adapt electrical power generation to the growing demand, the power distribution system is to be enlarged. Simultaneously, the power capacity of the captive power plant will be augmented to 590 MW.
For this purpose, Siemens is supplying the complete turnkey high-voltage distribution equipment. The scope of supplies and services includes the design, supply and installation of 220 kilovolt and 132 kilovolt switchyards connected by 26 kilometer-long transmission lines. It also encompasses plant-wide substation automation system. Moreover, Siemens is responsible for testing and commissioning all the systems.
The aim of the Bokaro steelworks expansion plan is to increase hot metal production from 4.5 million metric tons to 7.44 million metric tons and crude steel production from 4.36 million metric tons to 7 million metric tons. As a result, the amount of salable steel products is set to grow from 3.78 million metric tons to 6.53 metric tons. To this end, the steelworks will be augmented with a new steel melt shop with an annual capacity of 3.8 million metric tons and a new cold rolling mill equipped by Siemens VAI for the production of 1.8 million metric tons of high-quality flat products per year. The project is scheduled to be commissioned by 2011-12.
