Berlin 2009 - a different take on the German capital

(PresseBox) (Würzburg, ) "Berlin 2009" is the title of the new calendar that Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) is currently distributing to customers and business contacts worldwide. In this calendar Thomas Berberich, who has worked for Koenig & Bauer since 1980 and started indulging his passion for photography in a freelance capacity in 2007, conveys the peculiar charm and contrasts of his favourite city in the form of architectural details and serendipitous encounters. His skill in capturing everyday objects from an unusual perspective imparts clarity to form and line. Discreet colouring enhances his individualistic view. Thomas Berberich reveals the essence, the inner being hidden from the fleeting observer. The emotive appeal of his images lies in his fresh interpretation of the seemingly commonplace.

In his photos Thomas Berberich prefers to focus on architecture and people. The pictures in calendar were taken during a summer weekend in 2008. Berberich used a Pentax 645 medium-format analogue camera with a 75mm standard or a 120mm telephoto lens. The deliberate use of a standard lens focuses attention on the image content, not the effect. The photographer's eye determines the image, technology takes a back seat. Pure photography, with authentic depictions of reality.

Unlike KBA's calendars of recent years, this time the emphasis is not on the effects that are possible with different types of coating. Printed on a large-format Rapida in KBA's Radebeul showroom, the calendar exemplifies the maxim that less can be more, ensuring that nothing distracts from the impact of the original images. The sober duplex-like blue cast against a white background was created in four-colour production and sealed with a matt coating. The unusual format of 680 x 320mm (26.77 x 12.59in) and discreet calendar dates, in different shades of grey, underscore the powerful impact of the images.

The fourteen-page calendar comes complete with its own microflute mailing sleeve, which was also printed and coated on the Rapida 142. Following distribution to KBA's customers and business contacts worldwide just 50 calendars will be available for which KBA is holding a prize draw. Anyone wishing to win one should e-mail anja.enders@kba.com by 15 December. The lucky winners will receive their calendars in January. The judges' decision is final.
