Argentina & Brazil Automotive Market News 2016
While Argentina and Brazil share 1,224 kilometres of border and a love of the popular South American drink “maté” (caffeine-rich infused drink), in the current automotive climate the 2 neighbours are showing polar opposites.
The overall Argentinian market was up 6.29% for July and 7.39% YTD. This is currently being driven solely by the Private Market with a growth of 7.46% for July and 8.52% YTD. While the Commercial Market suffering its 2nd month in a row of negative growth with a loss of -2.2% for July this is has once again kept the figures in negative and show -0.76% YTD. There were no changes to rank inside the top 3 with VW, Ford and Chevrolet all keeping their places respectively, however impressive results from BMW and Jeep saw them climb into the top 20. With BMW moving from 22nd to 15th and Jeep from 24th to 16th this is in part due to the increasing demand for SUVs from the market place. Individual model honours go to Toyota Hilux that took the #1 spot for July and showed an increase of 35.5% YTD when compared with same period last year. The Chevrolet Onix also deserves praise with an outstanding performance that gained it entry into the Top 5 for July, a jump of no less than 17 places.
With the Olympics finished and the Paralympics drawing to a close the hope is for some Olympic spirit to remain and help the Brazilian market to recover from its current slump. The July figures are certainly no podium finish with a slide of -20.3% for July and -26.3% YTD. Heaviest hit seems to be the Private Market with -26% for July and -29.5% YTD. The Commercial Market continues to recover from its January low and while it has recorded a 6 month of growth it still remains within negative territory with a -3.2% for July and – 16.3% YTD. With the current political unrest still playing in the background the hope is for the rest of the year to bring some more positive results. However the situation is not all doom and gloom Jaguar, Porsche, Toyota and Jeep all had positive July figures with the Brazilian built Jeep Renegade up 17.8% powering its way from 20th to 11th in the ranking. The mini car segment achieved its best figures for 2016 and this has come in part with the rise of the new Fiat Mobi. Only released in April this car stormed into the segment, stamped its arrival and as of July figures outperformed both the VW Fox and Up who are firmly entrenched within the segment.
